VIETNAMESE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS MAINTAIN MARKET SHARE, BUT NEED GREATER VALUE ADDITION

03 Feb 2026

Vietnamese agricultural products maintain their market share in both export and domestic markets, but stronger linkages, deeper processing, and sustainable value addition are essential.

Vietnamese agricultural products maintain market share in export markets

Vietnamese agricultural products maintain market share across many key export markets despite ongoing global economic uncertainties. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAE), export turnover of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries reached USD 34.24 billion in the first 11 months of 2025, up 15% year-on-year.

These results confirm that Vietnamese agricultural products maintain market share and continue to play a crucial role in the national trade balance, particularly in sectors with strong competitive advantages.

Fruits and vegetables drive market share growth for Vietnamese agriculture

Within the export structure, fruits and vegetables recorded remarkable growth, with export value reaching USD 7.8 billion, and full-year revenue estimated at approximately USD 8.5 billion. Key products such as durian, mango, and pomelo have continued to expand into markets including the United States, Japan, and South Korea.

This strong performance has significantly contributed to helping Vietnamese agricultural products maintain market share internationally, while reinforcing the position of major agricultural commodities.

Vietnamese agricultural products maintain market share in the domestic market

Beyond exports, Vietnamese agricultural products maintain market share in the domestic market. Modern distribution systems, supermarkets, and retail chains increasingly prioritize locally produced agricultural goods due to advantages in freshness, traceability, and compliance with food safety standards.

In particular, consumer demand during the Lunar New Year period has shifted from appearance-focused purchasing to value-oriented consumption, creating additional opportunities for Vietnamese agricultural products.

Cooperatives and enterprises in the agricultural value chain

According to discussions at industry forums, agricultural cooperatives (HTXs - collective economic organizations linking farmers in production and consumption) and enterprises play a key role in enhancing agricultural value.

Building integrated value chains covering production, harvesting, storage, and distribution is considered a fundamental solution to ensure Vietnamese agricultural products maintain market share in a sustainable manner.

Value addition remains an urgent requirement

Although Vietnamese agricultural products maintain market share, value-added levels remain limited due to low rates of deep processing and continued reliance on raw exports and traditional markets.

Experts emphasize the need to focus on:

  • Improving product quality
  • Enhancing transparency and traceability
  • Investing in preservation and processing technologies
  • Standardizing growing area codes and packing facilities

Policy direction from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAE) is accelerating policy improvements related to growing areas, packing facilities, and official export channels to establish a more supportive legal framework for enterprises and cooperatives.

This is viewed as an important foundation for helping Vietnamese agricultural products maintain market share while gradually increasing value in international markets.

In an increasingly competitive environment, the fact that Vietnamese agricultural products maintain market share is a notable achievement. However, long-term development requires a clear shift from quantity-driven growth to quality-oriented production, and from raw exports to value-added agricultural products.

Enhancing value not only increases farmers’ incomes but also strengthens the position of Vietnamese agricultural products within the global supply chain.
