The Philippines records a surge in Vietnamese rice imports in early 2026
According to the latest data from the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) under the Philippine Department of Agriculture, the country has recorded a sharp increase in food imports.
Specifically, in the first two months of 2026, total rice imports reached over 820,000 tons, up 49% compared to the same period in 2025.
Within this overall picture, Vietnamese rice continues to affirm its dominant position. Statistics show that approximately 751,445 tons of rice imported into the Philippines originated from Vietnam, accounting for an overwhelming 87% market share. This reflects the high level of trust customers place in the quality and price of Vietnamese rice.
Rice export developments in the Mekong Delta
The strong increase in Vietnamese rice exports to the Philippines coincides with the peak harvest season of the Winter-Spring crop in the Mekong Delta provinces. This is the most important crop of the year, with the highest yield and quality.
Impressive growth in February
In February 2026 alone, Vietnam supplied nearly 380,000 tons of rice to the Philippine market. This figure accounted for about 61% of the country’s total rice exports for the month.
Focusing resources on boosting exports to this traditional market has helped domestic enterprises maintain a stable trade flow.
Vietnam’s position in the global rice market
Although export value slightly declined (reaching USD 595 million, down 12% due to global price fluctuations), in terms of volume, Vietnam still recorded a growth rate of 3.5%.
The Philippines is not only the largest customer but also a strategic partner that plays a key role in maintaining the stability of the regional rice market.

Market outlook and strategy for businesses
Based on early-year signals, demand for Vietnamese rice in markets such as China, Malaysia, and Africa is expected to recover in the coming quarters. This presents a major opportunity for businesses to further expand rice exports.
However, the report also notes that enterprises need to closely monitor price fluctuations and rising maritime transport costs. Maintaining consistent quality and ensuring delivery timelines will be key factors for Vietnamese rice to remain competitive against other suppliers in the global market.
Conclusion
With positive results from the Philippine market in the first two months of the year, Vietnam’s agricultural sector is building a solid foundation for 2026. Strengthening market share in major markets and proactively managing supply will help Vietnam’s rice export journey achieve new milestones.
